April is Named Financial Literacy Month
Better Understand Your Personal Finances
April 5, 2011
The White House has declared April as Financial Literacy Month and encourages Americans to learn more about their personal finances.
This has always been a good idea, but is even more important now, when so many citizens are trying to recover from the economic downturn of 2008. Many have seen the value of their homes and their retirement savings drop significantly, while others are also trying to pay off large credit card balances.
So how can someone develop a better understanding of their finances? Here are some of our favorite tools to help you get started:
360degrees of Financial Literacy – Developed by the American Institute of CPA’s, this site is dedicated to helping Americans understand personal finance. It has sections devoted to ten different life stages, from teens to retirees.
MyMoney.gov- Offers financial information specifically for teachers, parents, women and youth to help manage money.
Saving for College- This well regarded website by CPA and author Joseph Hurley offers detailed information on college savings plans offered by every state.
For Kids - If you want to help the children in your life become smarter about money matters, we can recommend these resources:
H.I.P. Pocket Change - This is a terrific website about money just for kids, created by the U.S. Mint.
U.S. Mint - This links to a different web page created for parents/teachers to help them teach financial literacy to children.
