Higher Sales Tax on Alcoholic Beverages in Maryland

New Rate Effective July 1, 2011

The Maryland General Assembly raised the sales tax on alcoholic beverages to 9% effective July 1, 2011.

Taxpayers who must report this 9% rate may not file their returns or remit the tax using the Electronic Funds Transfer Automated Clearinghouse (EFT ACH) option. This is because the ACH option does not yet handle the complexity of the information required to be submitted by these taxpayers. Instead, taxpayers who must include or report sales and use taxes for the 9% rate and who are required to file electronically must now use the Maryland Comptroller’s bFile web application at www.marylandtaxes.com to fulfill the electronic submission requirement.
