Unpaid Taxes Mean You Can’t Renew a Driver’s License or Auto Registration in Maryland
Outstanding Taxes Must be Paid Before Renewing in Maryland

Starting June 1, 2011, a new state law requires that all individuals and businesses with unpaid and undisputed taxes and/or unemployment insurance contributions cannot renew a Maryland driver's license or vehicle registration until the debts are paid.
The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) must receive a release from the Comptroller's Office or the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) before renewing the license or vehicle registration.
If an individual has unpaid taxes and is not in an approved payment plan, payment can be made online, or in person at one of the 12 local branches of the Comptroller's office, or by calling toll free at (855)213-6669.
Any business with outstanding tax debt and/or unemployment insurance obligations is subject to a hold on vehicle registration renewals.
Unpaid sales and use tax, admissions and amusement tax, corporate income tax, withholding tax, pass-through entity tax, alcohol tax, tobacco tax, and motor fuel and motor carrier taxes can cause your vehicle registration renewal to be held by the Comptroller's Office. You can email the Comptroller at mvahold@comp.state.md.us, pay in person at one of the Comptroller's local branch offices or call toll free at (855) 213-6669 to resolve the outstanding tax issue.
Unpaid unemployment insurance contributions can cause your vehicle registration renewal to be held by the Maryland DLLR. Contact the DLLR, not the MVA, at (410) 767-2699 or via email at licnrelease@dllr.state.md.us to address unpaid unemployment insurance contributions.
