Tax Credit for Summer Day Camp Expenses

You May Qualify for a Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit

July 6, 2011

Kids love summer vacation, but their working parents often dread the summer months. That’s because working parents often face higher expenses during the months off from school, when they enroll their children in day camps. Keep your receipts for those summer camps, because they may help you qualify for a tax credit for child care expenses.

The Child and Dependent Care Credit applies to summer day camps as well as expenses incurred throughout the year, such as daycare providers and sitters that come to your home. Overnight camps do not qualify for the credit, though.

If you qualify for the credit, you can claim up to 35% of your qualifying expenses, depending on your income.Taxpayers can use up to $3,000 of the unreimbursed expenses in a year for one dependent or $6,000 for two or more qualifying dependents to figure the credit.

For more information about the Child and Dependent Care Credit and whether it applies to your tax situation, please contact our tax professionals at 877.517.6872.
